Have you folks seen this new section on the Huffington Post called "Black Voices"?
What do you think about it?
Well me . . .? Not sure they're that good but they are recognizing what many of us blacks still don't:
Blacks ARE a force to be reckoned with in this country - no matter how you slice it!
We don't pay attention to anything, we shun the 'establishment' even though you CAN SAY we BUILT IT 'pro-bono' for the most part. We don't want To get involved in the 'system' because of the repressive history OF said system . . . but we are still having that reflexive reaction even though it is no longer the case! I've been hearing this 'refrain' about the 'Man' this and that since I came to this country almost 20yrs ago . . . And I'm telling you it's a straw 'Man'!
We are beaten before we even start!
"Don't draw attention to yourself!"
"Don't make no 'waves'!"
The language of fear, the language of the conquered.
But there is NOTHING stopping us from even 'engaging' . . . which we are refusing to do.
Hence all manner of interests economic and political exploit our 'cowering' population and feed us like caged animals (political: the Democrats have done some 'good' on our behalf but many of our black reps seem to be content to get 'scraps' from the table and think they're 'fighting' . . . Or the DNC at large throws us a 'bone' now and again when votes are tight!) . . . Or bleed our communities dry of wealth ( most black communities are devoid of any black owned businesses owned by folks in the community).
Most other ethnic groups with similar disadvantaged histories in this country have united and seem to have this subconscious, cohesive and collective sense of what's in the 'collective' interest. And they have made the economic system and political BEND to their will. Jews have done it, Hispanics have too. And other groups - Asians, Middle Eastern folks are united as well.
The system IS bending towards US too but . . . "no one has stepped up to claim the inheritance or reparations!"
We don't seem to recognize the 'form' it takes.
Obama is the BIGGEST 'Hint' of our undeniable 'weight' in this society but STILL you have folks like West that are so used to the 'endless' victimization that in the face of new realities that show that maybe we ARE getting somewhere . . . They cling Stockholm-like to a scope and reality of an existence that no longer exists the way they think!
Yes we STILL have institutional, literal 'death throes' of racism - like in the Troy Davis tragedy and other things like profiling, imprisonment, and brutality- but we CAN force society to fix it relatively quickly by:
Reengaging in the system we've long been 'taught' to 'fear' in every way! The long overdue way . . . And we'll see that there has long been a niche and place for us there, if only we'd take it!
Do not let yourselves be stopped before you start.
Huffington Post, like many other businesses, realizes and recognizes the 'strength' and MANY other aspects of our society do as well . . . time to step up and own it!
A report out today says that Black Purchasing Power in this country will top 1.1 Trillion . . .
That is no chump change and we need to be treated as seriously as that figure is.
And it's time to start making these parts of society do us justice for once!
And it starts real simply: political awareness and activism, and reliable participation in such.
Voting is the first step!
And stress needs to be placed on that last part:
We NEED TO BE 'RELIABLE' Participants!
We don't show up after making all that 'noise' we will get and deserve to watch the 'bird' 'flipping away' next time around!
