Here we go again . . . and I will be a stuck record yet again.
That 'smell' that people of color have grown to fear and loathe over the generations is wafting all over the place again:
Scott Walker in typical Republican fashion is refusing to condemn his state Senator for racist remarks he made about Kwanzaa.
Conservatives in the wake of the latest rout by the President have been asking themselves WHY Blacks and other minorities have left the Republican Party en masse:
Comments like this, and there are VOLUMES of this crap, are exactly why! Can't look that far? Just see Romney in this last election . . . a serious racial subtext has been running through his campaign.
The Reaction from the party is also another reason.
For Example: Look at what Republicans have said about the POTUS with mostly NO POLITICAL OR PROFESSIONAL CONSEQUENCES!
But yet all I hear from some folks is this 'Hallmark Gem':
"People should judge people on the content of their character and not the color of their skin."
Your 'nice statement' is just that: 'nice'.
They utter this statement like some unfaithful unfortunate clutches a cross as they are about to be consumed by a hoard of vampires in some B-rated horror flick!
The truth is this has no cache anymore because frankly that is not how folks really operate and not how society, for that matter, did and, to some degree, still functions.
It's a lofty, cum-bay-yah ideal that is a no-brainer to 'agree' with . . . but it isn't 'Reality'.
Until people get real and Society - political parties and the business community - starts PUNISHING, in severe ways, racism like this against Blacks and other minorities with SERIOUS ruinous consequences and make it GUARANTEED . . . then your 'nice wish' is toilet paper, hundreds of ply too thin to deal with the 'permitted undercurrent' of this filth!
Yes. Permitted . . . and 'nurtured'.
The Press permits and actually seeks these 'Klansmen' OUT to get the 'benefit' of the ratings. To get their own 'exclusive clip' that they can loop over and over again to 'shock' eyeballs into staying on their channels or web pages for a few segments longer or for a few minutes longer.
That practice ENCOURAGES this crap!
But yet they all feign shock and outrage when it happens again and again and AGAIN.
I'm tired of being spat on with this fakery of how racism against blacks and others is dealt with in our national media . . . and as such, is then allowed into our politics.
Bigots get coddled and protected while those who would smack them down get muzzled and/or ignored! Anchors, interviewers and hosts are under 'explicit instruction' under 'Pain of Unemployment' to let these racists have free, unrestricted reign.
ENOUGH!!
Until we force the media to change there won't be any such thing . . . just folks like me ranting about how messed up the latest 'dig' was on Facebook or some spirited back and forth in a thread 'somewhere' . . . but the status quod will continue to persist.
For one: I personally write and e-mail the networks and the politicians . . . but I fear I'm only one of far too few that are aware or that give a crap enough to do so.
That is the 'smell' I spoke of in the beginning . . . the 'hydrogen sulphide-supplicant' tendrils of the biggest stain on our country: Slavery and its 'father' Racism.
Racism and the like were legally enforced and socially accepted, and as such they permeated all aspects of this society . . . as insipid as smoke vapors you might say, but much more 'lasting'.
Although this 'swamp has been drained' in many areas over last few decades . . . institutional racism persists on 'islands of corporatocracy and institution' 'here and there'.
Our Press and Media are one of those 'holdouts' where their 'treatment of these issues' exemplifies . . . that the influence of this 'age-old ugly' is still potent . . . and that 'the room' still needs to be 'aired out'.
